Handover day is exciting, right up until you run a finger along a sill and it comes up white. Construction dust is different from household dust: it's fine silica and plaster that keeps settling for weeks, works into every track and cavity, and scratches surfaces if it's wiped the wrong way. A builders clean is its own discipline, and here's what a proper one covers.

Stage one: the rough clean

Before detailing makes sense, the big debris has to go:

• Stickers and protective film removed from windows, glass, appliances and sanitaryware
• Paint drops, render splash, silicone smears and plaster spots lifted with the correct scraper for each surface
• All surfaces dry-dusted top-down (cornices, walls, frames) before anything gets wet
• Floors industrially vacuumed with fine-dust filtration

Stage two: the detail clean

• Windows: glass inside and out, frames, tracks and weep holes cleared of grit
• Kitchen: cabinetry inside and out, drawers vacuumed then wiped, appliances unwrapped and polished, stone benchtops finished with the right product
• Bathrooms: grout haze removed from tiles, shower glass polished, tapware descaled of grout residue
• Wardrobes and storage: shelves, rails and mirror sliders
• Doors, skirtings and switches: every touch point wiped and buffed
• Floors: final vacuum and mop once the dust has been eliminated at the source, not pushed around

Why it matters for your handover

If you're a builder, the clean is your final impression, the moment the client sees their finished home for the first time. If you're an owner moving in after a renovation, silica dust is not something you want circulating with kids or pets in the house. Either way, this is a job where "close enough" shows.
